Description

The Karlstad occupies a specific position in the Golden Designs outdoor lineup that no other model quite fills: a 6-person hybrid cabin rated for both indoor and outdoor use, built with an all-weather exterior and a full Canadian Red Cedar interior, combining a Harvia "WALL" 8kW traditional stove with the most comprehensive full-spectrum infrared system in the Modern Series. Thirteen total IR emitters -- 4 Carbon PureTech Near Zero EMF FAR infrared heating panels and 9 near-infrared heating elements -- give the Karlstad more infrared coverage than the 5-person Gargellen (10 emitters) and the 3-person Carinthia (8 emitters), making it the top-of-range infrared performer in the Classic Series outdoor hybrid lineup. The traditional stove and the infrared system operate independently via a main power switch: position 1 routes power to the stove, position 2 routes power to the infrared system, position 0 is off. The two systems never run simultaneously.

 

The exterior is an all-weather composite construction that handles outdoor exposure without the annual stain maintenance that natural wood exteriors demand. The interior is a different matter entirely -- every interior surface is natural Canadian Red Cedar: walls, ceiling, benches, backrest, and bench support panels. Canadian Red Cedar's naturally occurring oils produce the aromatic quality that for most people is inseparable from the traditional sauna experience. The interior must remain natural; no stain or finish is applied and none should be added. The manual notes that a small percentage of the population may have an adverse reaction to the aromatic properties of Canadian Red Cedar, specifically those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and advises discontinuing use if symptoms occur.

 

What makes the Karlstad's infrared system worth understanding is that the near-infrared elements are not just positioned on the wall panels -- the bench support panels on the GDI-8226-01 also carry NIR heaters that can be individually toggled on or off from the infrared control panel. This means the infrared coverage wraps from the walls into the bench level, producing a more thorough full-body exposure than a wall-only panel layout. At the ideal infrared temperature range of 118 to 132 degrees Fahrenheit, the session is fundamentally different from the stove session -- lower ambient temperature, longer comfortable duration, and a different physiological profile. Both options are built into the same cabin, accessible the same day.

 

Inside, the Karlstad runs two independent control panels. The Sauna Control Panel manages the infrared system's temperature, timer, and on/off functions with touch key technology that locks after 3 minutes of inactivity (press and hold the power button to unlock). The Light/BT Control Panel manages the oversize interior chromotherapy color lighting system with red light therapy feature, the bench accent lighting, FM radio, and Bluetooth audio through the built-in performance speakers. Both panels function when either heat source is active. The control panels are located on the right side wall panel; speakers are on the rear wall panel. The chromotherapy lighting is operated via the included remote from inside the cabin, with color selection, white/reading light, and red light therapy all accessible from the same remote.

 

The Karlstad is a custom production unit with limited quantity available. It is rated for both outdoor and indoor installation. Assembly requires three adults, a battery-operated Phillips screwdriver, rubber mallet, claw hammer, leveler, and two ladders. The exterior roof panel can hold up to approximately 20 pounds of snow per square inch. When not in use outdoors, a waterproof cover is recommended. The Harvia WALL stove requires the power line to be run through the dedicated vent hole in the wall panel and the vent closed before mounting -- the vent cannot be opened once the heater is installed.

INSTALLATION NOTE: Location must be dry, level, and away from any water source. Three adults are required for assembly. The surface must support the assembled weight plus occupants (can exceed 1,000 lbs). Approved base types include concrete slab, concrete pavers, gravel, cinder blocks, and solid wood deck. For the Harvia WALL stove, the electrician must run the power line through the vent hole in the right side wall panel and close the vent before mounting the heater -- the vent cannot be opened once the heater is installed. All electrical connections must be made by a certified licensed electrician using copper wire rated at 90 degrees Celsius minimum; aluminum wiring is not permitted. The main power switch must be turned to position 0 before switching between heating modes. The infrared and traditional stove systems must not operate simultaneously. When installed outdoors and not in use, a waterproof cover is recommended. For every four hours of use, shut the sauna down for one hour to cool down.
