Description

The barrel sauna is the most efficient geometry in outdoor sauna design. The curved interior eliminates the dead air volume that collects in the corners of a flat-wall room, concentrates heat at bench level where the occupants actually sit, and allows the cabin to reach operating temperature faster and hold it more consistently than any box-format sauna of comparable size. The Golden Designs Klosters takes that geometry and scales it to six people -- a barrel sauna built for a household, a group, or any outdoor setting where the experience is a shared one rather than a solitary one.

The Klosters is built from Pacific Premium Cedar throughout -- a wood chosen for outdoor sauna construction because of its natural resistance to moisture and insects, its dimensional stability under the expansion and contraction cycles that heat produces, and its aromatic quality at temperature. The manufacturer notes that cedar may cause eye, skin, or respiratory irritation or an allergic reaction in some users; discontinue use if symptoms occur. For the majority of users, Pacific Premium Cedar is the sauna wood of choice, and the Klosters delivers it in a six-person format that few residential barrel saunas match. Note that the cedar exterior will begin to grey after approximately one to two years if not maintained with a UV protectant -- this is a normal characteristic of the wood, not a defect.

The stove is the Harvia WALL 8kW, a wall-mounted electric heater with built-in controls that provides the full traditional sauna experience: the kind of radiant heat that produces deep perspiration, muscle relaxation, and the high ambient temperature -- ideal range 170 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit, maximum 190 degrees -- that defines the traditional sauna session. The stove must be installed by a certified licensed electrician on a dedicated 240V/40AMP hardwired circuit using copper wire rated to 90 degrees Celsius. Aluminum wiring is not permitted in this application.

The stave assembly, bench system, interior backrests with integrated accent lighting, and bronze privacy tempered glass door all ship in three boxes and assemble with three adults, a battery-operated Phillips screwdriver, claw hammer, 17mm wrench, and a ladder. The 6-person model uses four support cradles, eight stainless steel screws to anchor the stave assembly, and four bench support pieces specific to this model. The stainless steel bands that hold the barrel together must be inspected and tightened every four to six months as the wood expands and contracts seasonally.

A separate 120V/15AMP outlet powers the interior LED control panel for accent lighting and the backrest accent light. Note that the "Light 1" button has no function on this barrel model -- only the "Light 2" button activates the interior lighting. The sandglass, bucket, and scoop ship with the unit for immediate use.

The Klosters is rated for outdoor use. When installed outdoors and not under a covered structure, a waterproof rain cover (optional accessory) is available and recommended. Water seepage between staves is normal for an outdoor barrel installation and does not damage the wood. For every four hours of continuous use, the sauna should be powered off for one hour to cool down.

Warranty registration requires mailing the completed warranty card with proof of purchase to Golden Designs within 60 days of purchase. The warranty is void if the card is not mailed within that window.

INSTALLATION NOTE: Three adults required for assembly. Approved base types: concrete slab, concrete pavers, gravel, cinder blocks, or solid wood deck. Support cradles must rest on cinder blocks or equivalent structure if installed directly on the ground to prevent settling over time. The surface must be level and capable of supporting over 1,000 lbs (sauna plus occupants). Maintain adequate clearance around the sauna and ensure ventilation vents remain unobstructed at all times. The 240V/40AMP stove circuit and the 120V/15AMP lighting circuit must both be installed by a certified licensed electrician using copper wire rated to 90 degrees Celsius minimum -- aluminum wiring is not permitted. The Harvia stove guard must be assembled and installed prior to first use. Inspect and tighten stainless steel bands with a 17mm wrench every 4 to 6 months. The Harvia stove must be off and covered when cleaning the sauna interior. Never apply stain to interior surfaces. For every 4 hours of continuous use, power the sauna off for 1 hour.
