Description
The barrel sauna format has a physics advantage that flat-wall box saunas do not: the curved interior eliminates dead air in the corners, concentrates heat toward the seating area, and allows a smaller cubic volume to reach temperature faster than a rectangular room of the same footprint. Golden Designs built the St. Moritz around that principle. At 2-person capacity in a 75-inch-wide, 60-inch-deep barrel, it reaches its ideal 170 to 185 degree range in less time and with less energy than comparably sized box saunas -- and holds that heat with the consistency that makes the difference between a session that works and one that just gets warm.
The barrel is constructed from Pacific Premium Cedar -- chosen for its natural oil content, moisture and insect resistance, and the aromatic quality that fills the interior when the stove fires up. Pacific cedar has a tighter, denser grain than Eastern White Cedar, giving it greater natural weather resistance and a longer outdoor service life. The staves hold their shape under stainless steel bands and are designed to expand and contract with temperature and humidity without compromising the seal. A bronze privacy tempered glass door with stainless steel hinges and handle finishes the front face.
Inside, the St. Moritz is a purpose-built sauna room. Backrests on both sides include integrated accent lighting for a warm, low-level glow, controlled from an LED panel without reaching for the stove. Two-tier benches run along both sides, giving two adults room to sit or recline. The 6kW stove with built-in controls is wall-mounted at the front interior and sized for the St. Moritz's volume; an 8kW upgrade is available for faster heat-up or colder climates.
The sauna arrives in three crates and assembles with a battery-powered Phillips screwdriver, claw hammer, and 17mm wrench; three adults are recommended. Place it on a concrete slab, pavers, gravel, cinder blocks, or a solid wood deck. The stainless steel bands need periodic tightening every four to six months as the cedar moves with the seasons.
The St. Moritz carries a 5-year limited warranty on electronics and a 1-year warranty on the stove from the original date of purchase, is suitable for residential and light commercial use, and requires warranty registration within 60 days of purchase.
