Description

The barrel sauna format has a physics advantage that flat-wall box saunas do not: the curved interior eliminates dead air in the corners, concentrates the heat toward the seating area, and allows a significantly smaller cubic volume to reach temperature faster than a rectangular room of the same footprint. Golden Designs built the St. Moritz around that principle. At 2-person capacity with a 60-inch depth and a 75-inch-wide barrel, the St. Moritz reaches its ideal operating range of 170 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit in less time and with less energy than comparably sized box saunas -- and it holds that heat with the kind of consistency that makes the difference between a session that works and one that just gets warm. This is the version of the barrel sauna that is built to perform from the day it goes up, not just to look the part.

 

The barrel is constructed from Pacific Premium Cedar -- a wood chosen for outdoor sauna applications because of its natural oil content, its resistance to moisture and insects, and the aromatic quality that fills the interior when the stove fires up. Pacific cedar has a tighter, denser grain than Eastern White Cedar, giving it greater natural weather resistance and a longer outdoor service life with minimal maintenance. The exterior stave construction holds the barrel shape under the stainless steel bands that cinch the sauna together, and the structure is designed to expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes without compromising the integrity of the seal. The bronze privacy tempered glass door and matching stainless steel hinges and handle add durability and a clean, finished appearance to the front face of the barrel.

 

Inside, the St. Moritz is a purpose-built sauna room, not a converted outdoor box. The interior backrests on both sides of the bench include integrated accent lighting, creating a warm, low-level glow that makes the session feel deliberate rather than utilitarian. The LED control panel allows lighting adjustment without reaching for the stove. The two-tier bench configuration runs along both sides of the interior, giving two adults genuine room to sit or recline. The stove is a 6kW unit with built-in controls, wall-mounted and positioned at the front interior per the installation instructions. The 6kW output is appropriate for the St. Moritz's interior volume, and an 8kW upgrade is available for buyers who want faster heat-up or who plan to use the sauna in colder climates.

 

The sauna arrives in three crates and assembles with standard hand tools -- a battery-powered Phillips screwdriver, claw hammer, and 17mm wrench. Three adults are recommended for assembly, primarily for the steps that require holding the front and rear wall panels while the staves are set. The sauna is designed for outdoor placement and can be positioned on a concrete slab, concrete pavers, gravel, cinder blocks, or a solid wood deck. The stainless steel bands will need periodic tightening every four to six months as the cedar expands and contracts with seasonal changes -- a standard maintenance step for all stave-construction barrel saunas.

 

The St. Moritz carries a 5-year limited warranty on electronics and a 1-year warranty on the stove from the original date of purchase. The sauna is suitable for residential and light commercial use. Warranty registration is required within 60 days of purchase.

INSTALLATION NOTE: The sauna must be placed on a level surface capable of supporting the assembled weight of the sauna plus occupants, which can exceed 1,000 lbs. Approved base types include concrete slab, concrete pavers, gravel, cinder blocks, and solid wood deck. Do not move the sauna after assembly. All electrical connections must be made by a certified electrician using copper wire with a 90-degree Celsius rating. Aluminum wiring cannot be used. Stainless steel bands must be inspected and tightened every 4 to 6 months. Apply exterior wood water repellent treatment within one month of assembly and 2 to 3 times per year to protect the cedar from UV and weather exposure.
