Deck Installation Kit

A wood or composite deck is one of the most popular places to install a gas fire pit or fire bowl. It is also one of the environments where doing it right matters most. Wood decks and composite decking materials are combustible, and a gas fire feature installed directly on them -- without proper thermal protection -- creates an unnecessary risk from the heat generated around the burner assembly and flex line connections. HPC Fire's Deck Installation Kit is the purpose-built solution that eliminates that risk and makes a deck installation safe, code-compliant, and permanent.

The kit is built around a single, exceptionally well-suited material: basalt insulation. Basalt is a naturally occurring volcanic rock with remarkable heat resistance properties. It can withstand sustained high temperatures that would damage or degrade standard insulation materials, making it the right choice for the thermal environment directly beneath an active gas burner. The basalt insulation panel sits inside the fire pit enclosure or bowl and is placed over a layer of paver blocks -- at least 1 inch thick, sourced from any local builder's supply store -- that elevate it off the deck surface. Together, the paver base and basalt insulation create a thermal barrier that protects the deck from flame exposure and excess heat around the incoming flex line connection points.

The incoming gas stub must protrude through the deck surface, through the paver block layer, and through the basalt insulation so the fire pit or bowl's flex line can connect properly. The basalt insulation panel can be cut easily with a standard utility knife to accommodate any gas stub configuration, ledger cutout, or specific installation geometry. Larger fire pits or fire bowls that exceed the dimensions of a single panel can be covered with multiple pieces.

Two sizes are available to match your installation. The FPI-DECK20SQ is sized for fire bowls -- a round or compact installation with a 19.6-inch by 19.6-inch basalt panel. The FPI-DECK39SQ is sized for fire pits -- a larger square or rectangular installation with a 39.3-inch by 39.3-inch basalt panel (1 square meter). Both kits are compatible with Electronic Ignition (EI), Push-Button Flame Sensing (FPPK), and Match Lit (MLFPK) burner configurations.

Note that the Serenade 40 spec sheet from Dekko specifically calls out this kit as required for deck installations. If your Serenade, Alea, or any other Dekko or HPC fire pit is going on a wood or composite deck, this kit is not optional -- it is a required component of a properly completed installation.

Products typically ship in 1 to 2 business days from HPC's warehouses in Las Vegas, NV and Dayton, OH.

Features

  • Required for Deck Installations -- This kit is required any time a gas fire pit or fire bowl is installed on a wood or composite deck. It is specifically called out as a required installation component in Dekko's Serenade, Alea, and other fire pit spec sheets. Not optional for deck placements.
  • Protects Wood and Composite Decking from Flame and Excess Heat -- The basalt insulation provides a thermal barrier inside the fire pit enclosure or bowl that protects the deck surface below from heat generated around the burner assembly and flex line connections during operation.
  • Natural Volcanic Basalt Insulation Material -- Basalt is a naturally occurring volcanic rock with exceptional high-temperature resistance, making it ideal for the sustained thermal environment produced by a gas burner. Far more heat-resistant than standard insulation materials.
  • Works with a Paver Block Base -- The basalt panel is placed over a layer of paver blocks (1 inch minimum thickness) that are sourced from any local builder's supply store. The paver blocks create an air gap and physical buffer between the deck surface and the insulation. Paver blocks are not included.
  • Gas Stub Must Protrude Through All Layers -- The incoming gas stub must pass through the deck surface, through the paver block layer, and through the basalt insulation for the flex line connection. The panel accommodates this with easy field cutting.
  • Easily Cut with a Standard Utility Knife -- The basalt insulation panel can be cut to any shape, size, or configuration on-site using a standard utility knife. No special tools required. This allows it to be fitted around gas stubs, structural elements, or any specific installation geometry.
  • Multiple Pieces Can Be Used for Larger Installations -- Larger fire pits or bowls that exceed the panel dimensions can be covered using two or more pieces of the basalt insulation. Additional kits can be ordered as needed.
  • Compatible with Electronic Ignition, Push-Button Flame Sensing, and Match Lit Burner Systems -- Works with all three of HPC's primary burner configurations: EI (Electronic Ignition), FPPK (Push-Button Flame Sensing), and MLFPK (Match Lit). No compatibility restrictions by ignition type.
  • Two Sizes Available for Fire Bowls and Fire Pits -- FPI-DECK20SQ for fire bowls (19.6 in x 19.6 in basalt panel); FPI-DECK39SQ for fire pits (39.3 in x 39.3 in basalt panel / 1 sq meter). Choose the size that matches your fire feature.
  • Includes Installation Instructions -- Step-by-step instructions are included with both kit sizes. No guesswork on the installation sequence.

What's Included

FPI-DECK20SQ (Fire Bowl Size):

  • 1 x Basalt insulation panel: 19.6 in x 19.6 in - Installation instructions

FPI-DECK39SQ (Fire Pit Size):

  • 1 x Basalt insulation panel: 39.3 in x 39.3 in (1 sq. meter) - Installation instructions

NOT INCLUDED (MUST BE SOURCED SEPARATELY):

  • Paver blocks (1 in minimum thickness -- available at any local builder's supply store; must be sourced and purchased separately before installation)
  • Utility knife (for cutting insulation panel to fit)
  • Additional basalt kit panels if your fire feature footprint exceeds the single panel dimensions (order additional kits as needed)
  • Gas fire pit or fire bowl (sold separately)
  • All gas connection hardware, flex lines, and burner components (sold with the fire pit or separately)

INSTALLATION OVERVIEW: 1. Position paver blocks (1 in minimum thickness) on the deck surface inside the fire pit enclosure or bowl area. 2. Place the basalt insulation panel on top of the paver blocks. 3. Ensure the incoming gas stub protrudes through the deck, through the paver block layer, and through the basalt insulation so the flex line can connect. 4. Cut the basalt panel as needed with a utility knife to accommodate the gas stub and any other installation requirements. 5. Proceed with installation of the fire pit or bowl per the manufacturer's instructions.
