That is accurate, and it undersells it: at 120 inches wide by 120 inches deep by 98 inches tall and 450 pounds of assembled HDPS poly lumber, the St. Clair 10 by 10 is a serious outdoor structure that happens to look like a beautifully finished wood pergola.

 

The material is Sequoia's proprietary HDPS -- high-density polystyrene, the company's founding polymer and the only poly lumber they make that is rigid enough to carry a structural overhead frame. Most poly lumber in the outdoor furniture market is HDPE -- high-density polyethylene, a more pliable material with excellent impact resistance but not the stiffness required to hold a pergola together under load. HDPS is different. It is lighter and more rigid than HDPE, engineered specifically for structural applications, and the reason Sequoia is one of the very few producers globally making a poly lumber pergola product at all. The 10 by 10 St. Clair is not a wood alternative in the sense of an approximation -- it is a wood alternative in the sense of a replacement that performs better in every outdoor metric.

 

The HDPS surface is embossed with a wood grain texture that is consistently recognized across the industry as the most realistic wood look available in a poly lumber product. It does not look like plastic. It looks like a well-made wood pergola, and it will continue looking that way without any maintenance intervention.
